Children with ADHD/ADD

Understanding the problem

  • ADHD/ADD is easy to misdiagnose because it can be confused with other mental disorders.
  • Some claim ADHD/ADD is over-diagnosed and too many children are being prescribed stimulant medications unnecessarily.
  • In other cases it is believed that the condition is often under-diagnosed (for example, such as among young girls and teens where the symptoms may be less disruptive or not include a hyperactive component that is seen with most boys).
  • Because of this controversy, some parents of children who in fact do have ADHD/ADD and could benefit from medication, hesitate or are reluctant to seek help resulting in children that may not be getting the care they need.
  • In the past, physicians have been able to rely solely on subjective analysis of the patient to reach an assessment. In addition, primary care providers and their patients have felt that the only option for treatment is a trial-and-error medication program.

The solution

  • Lexicor DataLex ADHD Indicator Report provides a highly accurate, objective, reliable, and cost-effective biological indicator for ADHD.
  • Research has demonstrated that ADHD can be accurately classified using quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) data.
  • Lexicor DataLex Report analyzes quantitative EEG data taken from the patient, statistically comparing this brain wave data against normal brain wave data.
  • The objective and scientifically valid physiological data within the DataLex Report offers 90% sensitivity, 94% specificity and .96 test-retest reliability. That is, IT CAN RECOGNIZE ADHD TO AN ACCURACY OF 90% AND IDENTIFY THOSE WITHOUT ADHD TO AN ACCURACY OF 94%.
  • The DataLex Report, when combined with a physician's expert evaluation, will lead to a more accurate assessment of ADHD.

NeuroLex FAQs

How many people present with the symptoms of ADHD?
According to the National Institute of Health, ADHD affects 3%-5% of school-aged children in the US, however other estimates range up to 16 to 20%.

How does NeuroLex use EEG data to increase the power of your judgment?
EEG is a method of obtaining biological brainwave data from patients in a safe, non-invasive and objective procedure. EGG is a proven and powerful tool for mental health assessment and NeuroLex is a proprietary service that is built on this technology.

What is the NeuroLex Indicator Report for ADHD?
The NeuroLex Indicator Report is designed to aid a physician in their assessment of EEG data. This report is a representation of mathematical and statistical calculations based on existing and extensive research data for the post hoc analysis of raw EEG data.

Why should I use the NeuroLex Indicator Report in conjunction with the Psychiatric Evaluations done in the past?
The NeuroLex Indicator Report should be a means of evaluation because the information in a NeuroLexSM Indicator Report, used in conjunction with a physician's expertise, aids in the evaluation of ADHD. For patients who want the assurance that comes from reliability and the objectivity of EEG analysis, NeuroLex is here to help. The NeuroLex Indicator Report is supported by research studies (n=951) using a repeated measure design that show QEEG offers a 94% probability that a person does not have ADHD and a 90% probability that a person does have ADHD with a 96% reliability rate.

How is the assessment performed?
Data is collected at Sleep Diagnostics of Michigan, PC by a trained technician. A cap (much like a bathing cap) is placed on the patient's head. It is essential that the cap is snug fitting to collect good data for analysis. The technician applies a conductive gel through holes located in the cap, and in some cases, electrode connections are placed on the patient's face in order to help identify movement (called artifacts). During the actual data collection, the patient is resting with eyes closed for 10 minutes and again with eyes open for ten minutes. The entire process is completely non-invasive, and takes approximately one hour to complete.

Does insurance cover the NeuroLex procedure?
NeuroLex is covered by many insurance providers, and Sleep Diagnostics of Michigan, PC accepts most insurances. Unfortunately, it has been our experience that PHP, SPHN and Connect Care will currently not cover the procedure.
